Background:

For seventy or so years, the Leathersellers Technical College on Tower Bridge Road was the foremost site for vocational training in the British leather industry. In this lecture, Dr Ian Stone shall show how the College came to be founded where it was, how it grew to become a national monotechnic with the support of several livery companies, and what happened when the College closed in the late 1970s.

Dr Ian Stone obtained a PhD in history from King’s College London. Subsequently he has been a Junior Research Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research, a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London, and now a Resident Scholar at Dartmouth College, NH, USA. Ian has taught undergraduate classes in the history of London for more than ten years and has published widely on the city’s history in a variety of academic and non-academic fora: articles, chapters, blogs and more. His first book, a History of the Worshipful Company of Masons, came out in 2023, and Ihe is under contract to write two more – one of which will be published in the Oxford Medieval Texts series. If he doesn't have his head in a book somewhere, you’ll probably find him watching cricket.
